Mental Health Specialists And Support Workers



When someone suffers from a mental health problem whether it is depression or a more serious disorder such as schizophrenia, they are likely to come into contact with a number of professionals and support workers in the course of their treatment and recovery, so who are they?

For most people the first point of contact is usually their doctor who will be able to assess their symptoms, rule out anything else that may be causing them, and prescribe medication or refer you for some form of counselling or psychotherapy.

If the symptoms are severe or complex, or there are other problems, then your doctor may refer you to a psychiatrist for a more detailed assessment. A psychiatrist is a doctor who has undertaken further specialist study and therefore has in-depth knowledge of the brain and mental illness and will be in a better position to make an accurate diagnosis and to decide on the most appropriate treatment and medication.

However if your symptoms are more psychological or emotional in nature then you may be put in touch with a psychologist. Clinical Psychologists have studied the mind and how it can influence behaviour and are trained in various psychotherapy treatments. Psychologists will often specialise in a particular area of mental health and as such will be in the best position to advise you on what might be the most beneficial way forward for you. They cannot, however, prescribe drugs like a doctor or psychiatrist can.

People suffering with mental health problems will often come into contact with Community Psychiatric Nurses. CPNs work in the community and will therefore make home visits as well as see you in a clinic. They may specialise in a particular area of mental health and will play an important supportive role in helping people cope with their mental health problems by liaising with other specialists, by providing an understanding ear to talk to and by looking at ways of allaying any fears or worries you may have. They will also be able to offer advice on the side effects of any medication you are taking.

Occupational Therapists or OT's as they are often called, can help you find ways of overcoming practical problems and in doing so can help increase your confidence and your ability to cope on a day to day basis. Social workers on the other hand can help you with social issues. For example, they may assist you with your application for housing or state benefits, will help you sort out financial problems, childcare issues, or other challenges in your life that if are not dealt with may have a negative impact on your mental health.

Other professionals you may see include psychotherapists and counsellors. Psychotherapists specialise in the type of therapy they offer and counsellors listen and talk through problems with patients to help them find ways of overcoming them.

Although a visit to the doctor is the only action required for many people suffering with depression and anxiety or other mental health problems, being referred to someone else by your doctor doesn't necessarily mean you are more seriously ill. It's just that the most important thing for a speedy recovery is access to the right sort of treatment and help from the most appropriate person.

The History Of Mental Health



Mental health problems such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety related disorders have always been present in society but the ways in which we have dealt with them over the years has changed dramatically.

In mediaeval times people who showed symptoms of a disorganised mind were often subjected to barbaric treatments and many had to endure unimaginable suffering at the mercy of an uninformed and uneducated society who believed that mental health problems were supernatural in origin and the work of devils and demons.

Even as recently as the early part of the 20th century, proper mental health care as we would expect today was non existent. People with mental health problems were invariably detained in asylums where the focus was on restraint and confinement as opposed to treatment and recovery. Although some were discharged back into society, many people who found themselves in a mental institution would never actually leave.

It was around the 1930's that new forms of treatment were introduced which included electroconvulsive therapy and lobotomy which although controversial, had a big impact on mental health care, however, the most dramatic change came with the introduction of new drugs.

In the early 1950's the first antipsychotic drugs appeared and completely revolutionised mental health treatment. The first of these was chlorpromazine which was marketed as Largactil the UK and Thorazine in the US. Following on from then, new types of anti depressants were introduced including the mood stabilising drug Lithium which proved to be effective for the treatment of bipolar disorder.

Are drugs always the answer?

The problem with drugs is that the benefits have to be weighed up against the risk of side effects, which in some cases can be severe. We also have to consider whether or not the evidence regarding the effectiveness of drugs is unbiased. Let's face it, there is a lot of money at stake for the pharmaceutical companies, only recently we were reading in the press that some of the research regarding Prozac was suppressed and that it didn't work as well as many believed.

There is no doubt that drugs do have an important role in the treatment of mental health problems, particularly for the more severe disorders, however, many professionals and patients today are looking for a more drug free approach, particularly for milder forms of depression and anxiety related disorders.

Moving forward

The recent discovery that a lack of Omega 3 fatty acids may play an important contributory role in the development of mental health problems has led to countless studies into the effectiveness of fish oil as a potential treatment and the results are more than promising.

There is also an increasing recognition of the effectiveness of so called talking therapies and as such more and more people are being referred for some form of psychotherapy either alongside or instead of medication.

Nowadays, there is a much greater emphasis on treatment as a step towards full and complete recovery from a mental health problem.

Yes, we've come a long way as far as our understanding of mental health issues is concerned and we now care for people who are suffering better than we ever have in the past but we still have a long way to go.

What we all need to be aware of is that any single one of us could develop a mental health problem at any time of our lives and therefore we should all work together to help to eradicate the stigma that people suffering from mental health problems still have to face, even today.

How to beat children's hair loss


The majority of hair loss that we see in children is alopecia areata, or something that started as areata and then spread to larger sections of the scalp, where it takes on names like alopecia totalis or alopecia ophiasis.

Alopecia areata need not just develop on the scalp. It can start off in the eyebrows for example or eye lashes.

What can a parent do?

Parents often try to look for what triggered the problem, where in reality no one actually knows and the treatment options remain the same. The usual starting place is taking the child to a doctor to establish what is wrong. In most cases this is done just by looking at the pattern of hair loss. A punch biopsy in the region of loss is the only fool-proof method of confirming a definite diagnosis. Doctors usually refer the child to a dermatologist and this is where we often see a lot of anxiety. It is common to see the problem progressing whilst waiting for an appointment with a busy dermatologist.

A high percentage of children's hair loss cases get better on their own without treatment. Treatment

The most common treatment we see for alopecia areata is that of suppressing the immune system with topical steroid creams or injections. As steroids are known to cause some side effects and are not normally safe to use for long periods of time, many doctors will often avoid using them to see if the problem clears up on its own.

To the parent, this adds to their anxiety: In many cases it has taken many weeks to get to see a dermatologist only to be told that there will be no treatment available at that point. Other parents are prescribed steroids, but when they read the list of side effects they are then too nervous to start using them.

Another example is that in advanced cases where the hair is lost from the entire scalp, it is usually the very top of the scalp that grows back the fastest. It follows that knowing this and being able to see pictures of similar recovery patterns helps to put ones mind at rest. What matters most is knowing what to expect and being aware that you are making positive progress.

The final piece that it is useful to know, is that often a patch will start to regrow and other new ones form or new ones form before all the patches recover. This can happen if the child is being treated or not. It is very easy to panic if you see the problem appearing to get worse and jump to another treatment option rather than hold steadfast.
